Hither at the centre we participate in noble silence from ix.30 pm until the morning coming together at viii.30 am, and a little later Sundays. While it may seem a somewhat odd to step back from our social lives, inside the context of our exercise of mindfulness it makes perfect sense. Noble silence is a technique attributed to the Buddha, which resonates with the Buddhist approach to personal revelation – 1 of straight feel. This appeal to the logical mind as nosotros are encouraged to form our own truths through the experience of meditation.
One demand non exist a Buddhist to reap the benefits of Noble Silence, however – taking quiet time to live in the moment helps us to identify destructive thought patterns, allows us the time to be ourselves, and trains the states to better live in the moment. Our senses become sharpened and we become more firmly embodied and aware. In a modern world of busy-ness and stress, Noble Silence allows the states to 'to hear with our skin and feel with our eyes,' thus becoming more mindful and whole.
Poet and writer of many books on Buddhist spirituality, Lama Surya Das, explains it best:
"Listening takes place not merely through the ears, but with all the senses. Sometimes the all-time way to prepare ourselves to hear in a new and ameliorate way is to be all the same and silent. When nosotros quiet our motor minds — and our motor mouths — we discover that nosotros are meliorate able to open our hearts. The ancient practice of Noble Silence helps us begin the process of hearing in a new way; this is a timeless and wise practise that helps u.s. be more than sensitive and perceptive."
We do not withdraw from the community during this time, equally Nancy McCaochan of Karma Yoga says, nosotros simply get, 'However plenty on the within so that we can savour the presence of our friends, who are as well tranquility enough within themselves to enjoy the states–energetically and wordlessly.' Practicing noble silence allows us to acquire to relax in the presence of silence, and helps us to remove the masks we use when we communicate with others.
